What This Map Covers

Map viewport covers Prince Edward Island using recent NOAA GOES East and West Geostationary Lightning Mapper flashes. Prince Edward Island is a small, low-lying island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, so the whole province fits inside one tight map viewport and nearby water dominates the surroundings. The viewport spans the whole province, including Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford. Thunderstorms here are a warm-season pattern, generally June through August.

GLM detects optical flashes from orbit. It does not classify every marker as a cloud-to-ground strike, replace Canadian weather radar, or predict where lightning will hit next. This is not an Environment and Climate Change Canada product and carries no warning status.

Safety limit: absence of a marker never proves outdoor safety. Satellite detections can be delayed or missed, and storms move between refreshes.

Charlottetown and the central island

The island is small and low, surrounded by the comparatively warm water of the Northumberland Strait. Sea breezes off both shores meet over the middle of the island, which is where local afternoon activity is most likely.

Storms that arrive from the mainland

Most of the lightning detected over PEI formed elsewhere — over New Brunswick or Nova Scotia — and tracked across the strait. Watching the neighbouring provinces gives more warning than watching the island alone.
